Summer Skincare Tips - from Nurse Genine

Summer is finally here - time to kick back and relax... at least until the school holidays begin! But while you're soaking up the sun (or chasing the kids around!), don't forget to show your skin a little extra love during these warmer months.

If you're unsure how to adjust your skincare routine for summer, I've got you covered. Here are a few of my go-to tips that can help keep your skin glowing, hydrated, and protected, without breaking the bank.

1. SPF 50: Your Daily Essential

Let’s start with the most important product - SPF 50. This isn’t just for beach days. You should be wearing sunscreen every single day, even when it’s cloudy or you're mostly indoors. UV rays can penetrate windows and still affect your skin. Daily SPF helps prevent premature ageing, sunburn, and protects against skin cancers. Reapply every 2-3 hours if you're out and about, especially if you're sweating or swimming.

Pro tip: Opt for a broad-spectrum SPF that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas are great for summer and won’t clog pores.

I love the Obagi tinted SPF, and usually use this as an alternative to foundation in the warmer months. You can purchase this here, just register and you’re good to go!

2. Hydrating Serum: Keep That Glow Going

Sun and heat can dehydrate your skin, even if it’s oily. A hydrating serum, especially one containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, helps lock in moisture and keeps your skin plump and refreshed.

The best part? It doesn’t have to be expensive. You can often find budget-friendly serums in high street stores or supermarkets. Apply it morning and night after cleansing and before moisturising. It’s a simple addition that can make a big difference.

My go to is the Obagi Daily Hydro drops. They provide an instant infusion of hydration to help soften fine lines & wrinkles leaving my skin soft and radiant. You can purchase these next time you’re in clinic, or by registering here.

3. Affordable, Reliable Skincare: Why I Love CeraVe

With so many skincare brands out there, it can feel overwhelming trying to choose the right one - especially if you're packing for a summer holiday and don't want to risk your expensive products in a suitcase!

My go-to brand recommendation for summer (and year-round!) is CeraVe. It’s gentle, affordable, and suitable for all skin types — even sensitive skin. Whether it’s their hydrating cleanser, lightweight moisturiser, or SPF products, CeraVe offers solid formulations backed by dermatologists that won’t upset your skin’s balance.

You can usually pick up CeraVe in most supermarkets, it’s a great budget friendly product to use all year round.

4. Bonus Tips for Radiant Summer Skin

  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps your skin stay supple from the inside out.

  • Don’t over-exfoliate. It’s tempting to scrub away sweat and oil, but over-exfoliating can damage your skin barrier - especially when exposed to sun.

  • Use a hat and sunglasses. Physical protection is just as important as SPF.

  • Stick to a routine. Consistency is key. Even on busy summer days, take a few minutes for your skin morning and night.

I hope these tips help you feel more confident in your summer skincare routine. Your skin deserves to feel as refreshed and nourished as you do!
